One Night in Vermont: The Vanishing of Brianna Maitland

The Disappearance of Brianna Maitland

Published by Crime Clueless Podcast

The car was still running.
The lights were on.
Her uncashed paycheck was in the passenger seat.
And the whole thing?
Was backed into an abandoned barn like a scene from a horror movie.

But this wasn’t fiction. This was Brianna Maitland’s last known moment—and almost 20 years later, no one has been able to explain it.

The Vanishing

On March 19, 2004, 17-year-old Brianna finished her shift at the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery, Vermont. She told coworkers she was heading to a friend’s house for the night—but she never made it. The next day, her green 1985 Oldsmobile was found in a bizarre position: backed halfway into a run-down barn along Route 118, with a broken headlight and signs of… well, we don’t really know what. Click here to see a picture of her car.

To this day, that scene remains one of the most unsettling and unexplainable pieces of a case that’s still missing its center: Where is Brianna? What happened that night? And who left the car like that?

The Rumors

As soon as Brianna vanished, rumors exploded. That she was mixed up in drugs. That she owed someone money. That she’d been abducted by someone she knew. That she’d been murdered and her body dumped on a pig farm. That she’d been trafficked. That she'd staged her own disappearance.

But here’s the thing: none of those rumors have ever been confirmed. Not by law enforcement. Not by evidence. And not by the people who knew her best.

What We Know (and What We Don’t)

  • Brianna was last seen leaving work around 11:20 PM.

  • Her car was found less than two miles away—abandoned in a way no one could explain.

  • Her belongings were left behind, including contact lenses, medication, and clothes.

  • Her mom didn’t find out she was missing until five days later.

  • The barn where the car was found had no usable surveillance, no witnesses, and the car wasn’t even reported suspicious by police until later.

There were suspects. There were confessions. There were “friends” who changed their stories. But still—no arrests. No confirmed sightings. No Brianna.

Why This Case Still Haunts

The case of Brianna Maitland is frustrating not just because it’s unsolved, but because the clues feel like they should’ve led somewhere. The car. The scene. The people she knew. There’s something in that story that doesn’t add up, and we think it’s time to stop pretending it does.

In this week’s episode of Crime Clueless, we break down the evidence, the suspects, the weirdest twists, and why the barn scene still feels like someone was trying to say something—or hide something. Because Brianna didn’t leave that way. She didn’t stage that scene. And someone out there knows the truth.

🧩 She Didn’t Leave That Way—She Deserves Answers

Brianna Maitland didn’t vanish on her own. She didn’t abandon her life, her friends, or her future. Something happened that night on a dark Vermont road—and the scene she left behind has never made sense.
